Obituary

The world became a little dimmer on Tuesday, May 26, when Paul P. Monahan, MD, passed away at the age of 77. After years of health challenges, he suffered a stroke and passed away peacefully at home, just as he wished. He leaves behind his wife of 41years, Susan Parslow; his daughter, Lindsey (Joey) Armeen; his son, Andrew Monahan(Sarah): his stepdaughter, Jennifer Bassett Rose; and five cherished grandchildren: Camille, Mays, James, Stanley, and Luna.

Paul was aptly described as a true spitfire—loyal, cantankerous, brilliant, and deeply devoted to his family and extended family. He was a pioneer in the field of emergency medicine, entering the specialty just as it became a defined practice and sharing his expertise. Beyond medicine, he pursued many passions and was a talented builder, carpenter, vintner, and pilot. Outside the hospital walls, this is where he found the most joy.

His love of animals and birds inspired many of his journeys around the world, where he delighted in observing them in their natural habitats.

Paul will be remembered for his sharp wit, strong spirit, and dedication to those closest to him. His presence filled a room, and his memory will live on in the stories shared, the lessons he taught, and the impact he had on family, friends, and colleagues. All those who knew him will continue to chuckle and share endless “Paul” stories.

Memories and condolences may be shared with the family in the guestbook section below.
